Book Review - Butterfly Tattoo by Deidre Knight PDF Print E-mail

There are some books you just have to read from beginning to end with out pause. This is the case with Deidre Knight's Butterfly Tattoo, a contemporary romance that has you settling in and reading for the long haul. Touching all the right chords, this is the story of love lost, love found and finding love with in. It's about the scars you can see and the ones that are hidden, the ones that reside deep in your soul and cause a heart to be broken. Ms. Knight's lyrical dialogue and ability to write cleanly what the heart wishes to express is magic, and her story about a man, a woman and a child finding each other after individual tragedy is telling of her talent.

What do you do when you've lost the love of your life? How do you cope when your partner, your co-parent, the person you thought you would spend eternity with dies? How do you get past a heart ache so big you thought that just putting one foot in front of the other was all you had energy for? Michael asks himself those questions every day since his life partner Alex died leaving him to raise their only daughter Andrea. When he meets Rebecca he begins to hope that perhaps his life could be about more than survival.

Rebecca has similar hopes. Having been brutally attacked, left for dead and terribly scarred for life, she has no illusions about love. But then she meets Michael. Together they begin to test the waters and to begin to hope again.

This story epitomizes and reinforces that love is about the person - not their color, creed, political affiliation or sexual orientation. Michael's first true love, the person whom he has a daughter with was a man. He loved him with a great passion. His death crushed him. Meeting Rebecca and falling in love with her, he knows what he has always known - that it's the person you fall in love with. And taking the journey with both Michael and Rebecca you understand this very clearly.

Ms. Knight takes away all the artifice and jargon and simply states through the conversations and thought processes of each character how important it is to love with unbiased freedom. Each chapter is written from a character's point of view. And she does this seamlessly. She has a lyrical style that allows you to understand each characters thoughts and struggles; the dialogue flows and ebbs and you ride the wave.

I cried a lot while reading this book. The sadness and tragedy Rebecca, Michael and Andrea overcome is touching. She uses a deft pen to bring a myriad of emotions to the reader and compels you to love them. Ms. Knight's thoughtful and understated approach will entice and enchant you and make you think; and most of all, fall in love with her book.

Touching the Brilliance of Sunrise - As Spellbinding As Left Behind? PDF Print E-mail

Touching the Brilliance of Sunrise-a novel of faith, love, and second chances is officially classified as Christian fiction romance. The back cover copy, however, promises a good book, plain and simple.

"Some of the best writing I've come across," says the endorsement by travel writer Teresa L. Carpenter. "It had me spellbound as much as theLeft Behind series."

For readers familiar with that Christian fiction series, this sounds like pretty high praise. So what's it about?

"Melissa, a youthful mid-life artist from California, takes a vacation with her three kids to the coast of Maine. She's hoping for some quality family time at a turning point in their lives...and dreaming of moving to Maine someday soon. They meet Kraig, a writer from Oregon, walking on the beach with his guide dog. He's slightly younger, articulate, gentlemanly, deeply intuitive...unlike any other man she's known.

"Neither is looking for love--but life has other plans. What happens when Melissa realizes she might have to choose between her lifelong dream of living in Maine...and being with Kraig?"

One of the great strengths of this piece of writing is its dialog. The book contains a large amount of conversation, clearly crafted by a writer skilled in this area. The characters all talk realistically, according to age, gender, and so forth, each speaking differently enough that you can almost tell who's talking without the attribution. There are a believable number of "ums" and "you knows," along with slang and vernacular--but no profanity.

The descriptions of people and places are also very pleasing to the ear. For example: "As she eased the car onto the highway that would take them out of the hills toward the wine country, the western sky was streaked with watercolor shades of peach and pearly gray. The dark, leafless branches of oak trees stood out like ink drawings against the blue-white background. A light sprinkle of rain dotted the windshield, and the landscape glittered with freshness and newness."

And because Melissa is an artist and Kraig is blind, we have many delightful opportunities to see the world through her eyes as she describes things to Kraig.

"The characters are realistically, likeably imperfect," continues the back cover copy. "They talk like real people, have real needs, make real mistakes, learn hard lessons. They grow in their faith and in their relationships with each other, setting an example for those around them...and for you and your family."

If you like a good story without violence or profanity, an upbeat romance with a happy but believable ending, a novel that makes you feel good about life... Touching the Brilliance of Sunrise is the book to put at the top of your reading list. It's available from the author's website, http://justrightcopy.com/books, as well as from Amazon.

The Immortal Highlander by Karen Marie Moning PDF Print E-mail

If you have ever scoffed at the thought of reading a book about faeries, this one will change your mind. "The Immortal Highlander" by Karen Marie Moning is a love story full of intrigue, passion, magic and time travel.

Adam Black, a gorgeous and sexy immortal, crosses the Fae queen, Aoibheal, and is stripped of his powers. She renders him mortal and invisible to humans and sends him to the human realm to see how they live. If he can gain an audience with her, he knows he can convince her to lift the curse. As luck would have it, he encounters Gabrielle O'Callaghan is a struggling law student. She's a mortal but she's also a Sidhe-seerone, one who possesses the ability to see the Tuatha Dé. All her life she has been trained to keep her ability to see the fairies a secret, lest she be killed by them, but she is powerless to resist the seductive Adam Black. Reluctantly, she agrees to help him. But other forces are in play and someone means to kill Adam before he can become immortal again.

This was the first of Karen Marie Moning's books that I read and it made me an instant fan. She brings Scotland to life for the reader. The mythology is well conceived and her characters are captivating. Alpha male Adam Black is the "bad boy" of the Tuatha De Danaan. He is a delicious hero - tall, dark and oh so sexy. But the strong willed Gabrielle is clearly his match. There's no need to have read the previous books, although you'll want to, after finishing this one. Get lost in the world of faeries, it's great fun and you'll be hoping for a happily ever after for this fairy tale.

Mona Lisa Craving - A Novel of the Monere by Sunny PDF Print E-mail

"Mona Lisa Craving" by Sunny is the third chapter in the Monère series. This tale about an alien race is a pulse-pounding erotic adventure. The paranormal story is narrated in first person by the heroine in a strong yet emotional voice. The plot picks up shortly after "Mona Lisa Awakening" concludes.

The Monère are a shape-shifting race that came to Earth long ago and live in secret among humans. They are children of the moon and their queens bask in its reflected light and share its power with their subjects. Mona Lisa, who rules the Louisiana Bayou, is an oddity among her own race. She's the first Mixed Blood Monère Queen, being part human. Now she is demon tainted as well and she's been claimed by Lord Halcyon, the Demon Prince of Hell. As a Monère queen she uses her sexuality to heal. Skilled warriors, a father and son, kidnap her and take her to their home in an attempt to force her to save a brother. When she has sex with the rogue warrior Dante in order to cure his madness she accidentally becomes pregnant. To make matters worse, returning memories of a previous life with Dante reveal a dangerous history of murder and mayhem.

Sunny adds exciting twists and turns in book three. New characters create more drama. Dante, the tortured hero, is an intriguing addition. There's lots of action and sex, fans won't be disappointed. If you enjoy books by Laurell K. Hamilton you will probably like this series as well. Sunny creates a fascinating world, violent and sexual, but the plot is complicated by many supporting characters and references to past events. You'll fare better by starting with book one.
